Ways To Improve Posture

I realized besides working a conscious effort to sit up straight, stand straight, walk straight, there are other ways of improving posture.

I’m wearing a back brace whenever I can, not so often now because I think my body has retained its muscle memory. I wear a lumbarwear (which looks like a girdle) occasionally, especially when I'm in cooler countries.

To have good posture, is to have a strong core. It consists of your abdominal muscles and back muscles.

I’m not too much an exercise person, you know the gym and the works. But I try to motivate myself by images of beautiful posture and try to get myself doing something.

So far, this is my plan.

I will try to go on walks daily, 10,000 steps a day to be exact.

Alternate my ballet routine and cardio exercises. Friends are always great company and distraction from the pain so I’m going to try to go cycling/play tennis/badminton/walking/exercise class with them.

Along with that, I hope to increase my intake of oxygen, fish, water, vegetables and fruits!

Hope you are having a finer time improving your posture than I am!

Advice: To Give Or Not To Give?

I am happy to share from experience, but I don’t quite enjoy giving advice.

Despite myself, whenever I come across a person who looks at me with big doe eyes and genuinely asks for advice (or help), I resist it as long as I can and after much nudging on the other person’s part, I let her know my point of view, as gently as I can.

I have come to realize that people only listen to what they want to hear. 95 % of the time, they are really not asking for advice, they are asking for justification for what they have already decided.

If it is not what they want to hear, they don’t appreciate it. Give them exactly what they want to hear and it’s love and praises for you all the way.

At the end of the day, people generally hear what they want to hear.

I have lost friendships along the way, those who ask for brutally honest opinions on their character, their relationships, their decision, no matter how much they re-assure me that it is valued AND no matter how gently I gave it. Even sugar-coated.

I have been in the opposite end as well and I’ve realized all people want is a listening ear. We shouldn’t bear the responsibility of their lives anyway.

Just a thought.

Elegant Ideas - Elegant Water

Little elegant gestures make your world just a little more elegant.

I shall be honest here.

I know that the benefits of being hyrdated.

Despite my head knowledge, my thirst just prefers coffee, tea, aloe vera juice … all which are fine in moderation but also are high in sugar. I want to try to drink more water but I wasn’t very successful.

Till I discovered the simple joy of adding a piece of fruit to my water. Lemons are usually my favourite because it doesn’t take much or long to have the distinct taste, though limes, strawberries, oranges have won me over as well.

To my amazement, I find myself naturally reaching for that glass of water beside me when I am my desk, working and typing away.

Just thought I’ll share this with everyone. xoxo Happy Weekend!

The Power of Choosing

A recent certain of events inspired me to make this post.

Ballet for Elegance, Poise and Grace

Until one has taken a ballet class yourself, one has no idea how much work goes into their gracefulness

Ballet started in the 15th century and was developed to perfection in the French courts. It is rated on a measure of physical endurance, skill, physical demands, stamina, flexibility and a number of other scales to be the number two most difficult and challenging sport in the world. (Soccer is number one).

Until you have taken a ballet class yourself, one has no idea how much work goes into their gracefulness

Quite surprising isn’t it?

Ballet dancers always move with such grace, elegance, beauty and softness.

Yet there is so much strength, control and discipline of character that goes on behind the veil.

Ballet dancers have to

  • Practice every day for at least an hour
  • Maintain a very strict diet.
  • Attend a class at least 3 times a week.
  • Practice good sleeping habits.
  • Give up their careers should they decide to get pregnant.
  • Try very hard to get into a good ballet school
  • And then try very hard to get a job with a prestigious ballet company
  • Spend a fair amount on classes, ballet gear etc.
  • It’s pure devotion to the art.

There is a lot of work and research that went into developing the art of ballet. In ballet class, the exercises that are used are extremely different from your usual jogging, aerobics, cycling, step classes. You’ll never see similar routines in those exercises. Many of these exercises develop the inner thighs which slim the thigh instead of muscle-bulking it. We hardly use the inner thigh too much in our everyday life so it is important to focus on it. They strength your ankles and back and even your upper and lower abdomen, without all those nasty stomach crunches.

That doesn’t mean it is easy. I remember my ballet teacher telling us to jump in five sets of 16. And we had to point our toes as hard as we could point in the air, maintain a very still lifted body posture, keep a calm face (and not pant), arms have to be held gracefully including fingers and land each time softly and not with a huge “thump”. It was incredibly hard to do. The idea is to make it look so easy and effortless.

That is why in ballet, it always looks so easy. You may even dare to think, “I could do that!”

Recently when pilates and yoga became popular, I’ve noticed they incorporated a few exercises that resembled ballet. The probable difference is that ballet is done always upright at the barre and in the centre (of the studio without support) and never on lying down or on the floor.

I started ballet when I was about five but quit after a few years because all my friends left the class. I was upset that they left and so I did not continue, much to my regret later. I picked up ballet again in my late teens and vowed never to leave it. I was obsessed then, doing part time ballet school and university at the same time. I ached perpetually. While now I am not practicing to be a ballet dancer, it has good benefits. It provides exercise, maintains flexibility, it gives good posture. I have had friends who had back problems when they were growing up, have had their doctor recommended ballet classes.

More over, I’ve always been a dancer. I love dance and so I especially love the art of dance. No other dance is more graceful and beautiful than one of the oldest dance form in the world.

Elegant Hats

Hats are almost always elegant.
I'm always inspired by elegant hats.

I had to make a trip to Seoul to do some work for my Elegant Woman project and was unable to reach my computer. It was a very busy but pleasant trip. I’ve never walked so much before but it was good! I don’t walk enough since I learned to drive.

Travelling is always a good experience for me because I come back inspired.

I’ve got many emails to attend to for now but I shall leave one note. I pay tribute to the hat.

I rode the subway in Seoul and I noticed that the older Koreans still wore hats. I applaud them for that. Sad but the casual generation have done away with hats, which I feel has a dignified elegance.

Whenever I am in Melbourne, Australia at my shop, I sometimes see this too. Older men wearing a coat and a hat – a different styled hat though.

I can’t help but wish I grew up in the more elegant times. When media did not influence us as much as old family traditions. Manners and kindness were taught to us by our family, the family church, teachers and respected care-givers. While media is great and mostly noble, there is no one to help us sift out clutter and keep only good. It will be up to us therefore, to develop a disciplined and stringent selection and taste and instill it in our young loved ones until they grow independent of us.

I apologize for this blurred shot. I took this picture too quickly. This is in Seoul.

Elegant Bathrooms

I love bathrooms. You always feel better walking out than walking in.

It is also a misconception that you need a large space and a large budget to make your bathroom pretty or elegant.

That's why I chose this simple shower for my blogpost about elegant bathrooms. Just a little imagination, inspiration and care and you'll be loving your bathroom for a long time.

How to live one's life

When asked for advice on how to live one's life, the novelist Henry Jams, who lived in an era when good manners were paramount to civilized behaviour, he answered:

"Three things in human life are important:

No. 1: Be kind. No.2: Be kind. No.3: Be kind."

Beautiful Windows

If I could live in the country, I would have windows looking out like this.

There is something elegant about windows.

How blessed we are to have windows. The freedom to look outside yet retain the privacy and comfort of our homes to read, write, think, entertain or enjoy a cup of coffee.

Simplicity of enjoying what we have is part of being elegant.

Being Elegant is a Choice

I came across this passage a while ago, though I can't remember where it was from, I saved it and it is worth repeating.

Life is all about choices.

When you cut away all that junk, every situation is a choice.

You choose how to react to situations.

You choose how people affect your mood.

Your bottom line: It's choice how you live life.

What great wisdom!

The Best Mother's Day Gift Ever

"A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts." Washington Irving

I thought long and hard about what is the best mother's day gift. And we can all guess, they can't be bought with money. I really hope she likes my gift this year. And I promise to drive her around and take her shopping on our next trip to Australia.

May you have the most blessed mother's day, hopefully with your mother.

I don't know what I'll do without her.

How To Have Good Posture

Do a little self check on posture today.

One looks more elegant when she has good posture.

Good posture contributes to an elegant poise. Years ago, women invested in posture lessons and learned how to walk properly. It was as important as learning to put on make up.
